How do you know which dental hygiene products are best? Which ones will actually provide the promised results and effectively help your smile? In order to know which products are best, look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance. The ADA Seal means that a product is safe and effective, and that it does what it promises.

In 1930, new dental products were arising, as well as extravagant claims about what they could do. The American Dental Association (ADA) took it upon themselves to adopt guidelines to evaluate dental products for safety and effectiveness. The ADA Seal of Acceptance program began in 1931, when the first ADA Seal of Acceptance was awarded. Today, more than 300 dental products carry the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

The ADA Seal is only awarded to worthy candidates. When evaluating dental products, about 100 consultants, including ADA staff scientists and members of the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs, review oral care product submissions. They determine if each product is worthy of the ADA Seal. Only products that have demonstrated their safety and effectiveness will be awarded the Seal by the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs.

Once a product earns the ADA Seal of Acceptance, the process is not over. The ADA Seal is only awarded for a five-year period. At the end of the five years, the company must reapply for the ADA Seal. If the company changes the product in any way, they must reapply for the ADA Seal.
